Boreal Bioproducts Introduces LigNoFog® - A Breakthrough in Lignin Processing for Anti-Fog Applications

  • First commercialized lignin-based hydrophilic surface treatment

  • 100% bio-based, LigNoFog® demonstrates new possibilities for lignin in consumer and technical applications

Boreal Bioproducts, a Finnish startup specialized in using forestry side streams for chemical production, has developed LigNoFog®, the world’s first known consumer product where lignin is the primary functional component. LigNoFog® is a 100% bio-based anti-fog coating designed to keep swim goggles and diving masks clear. Only a limited number of units will be produced, and the product will be available in selected sports and swimming gear stores.

Traditionally considered a forestry byproduct, lignin possesses unique chemical properties, including amphiphilicity, UV-blocking and antioxidant capabilities, that make it a viable alternative to various synthetic coatings. The launch marks the first known use of lignin, a naturally occurring biopolymer found in wood, as the core ingredient in an anti-fogging coating.

Developed and Tested with Athletes

Before launch, LigNoFog® underwent extensive real-world testing with elite swimmers, divers, and airsoft sports groups to ensure optimal effectiveness, water resistance, and durability.

“The experience was very positive,” said Niko Hämäläinen, elite swimming performance manager at Cetus, who tested the product with his team. “The product was easy to use and performed exceptionally well in real conditions. I believe that competitive swimmers will continue using this product in the future."

How LigNoFog® Works

LigNoFog® is powered by SOLV™ technology, a method invented by Dr. Alexander Henn, R&D Manager at Boreal Bioproducts. This proprietary method enables lignin to mix well with water without affecting its other properties, like antioxidant activity and UV-absorbance. This enables lignin to be incorporated in various applications where lignin was previously difficult to integrate. Unlike many conventional industrial lignins, SpruceLigno SOLV™ is free from chemical modifications and impurities, which makes it suitable for both industrial and consumer use.

“Lignin is often misunderstood—it has far more potential than people realize,” said Alexander Henn. “For decades, it has been considered nothing more than an industrial byproduct, but we see it differently. With LigNoFog®, we’re challenging old ideas about what lignin can be used for. Many of its untapped applications aren’t even that difficult to develop—you just have to think outside the box.

“Lignin has often been thought of as a somewhat hydrophobic polymer, but counter-intuitively, LigNoFog® relies on lignin’s inherent hydrophilicity. By increasing the attraction between water and the lens, the spray ensures that droplets spread into a clear, transparent layer, instead of forming droplets that obscure vision.”

LigNoFog® is designed, developed and manufactured in Finland by Boreal Bioproducts, using SpruceLigno®—a sustainably sourced lignin extract from spruce sawdust, a by-product of the wood industry. This waste-to-value innovation reduces reliance on fossil-based materials while delivering high-performance results. This product signifies the start of Boreal Bioproducts’ initiative to help the chemical industry shift toward sustainability.

LigNoFog® is available in a limited first batch, sold exclusively at select sports and swimming gear retailers, and select online shops.
